It used to be that when you talked about buying a dozen flowers, the only thing that popped into anyone's mind was 12 long stemmed red roses. Well, the flower world has come a long way, baby. The choices for flowers that you can purchase and give by the dozen are mind boggling. If you're going to purchase a dozen flowers, you should first decide - what is the meaning behind the flowers?

Flowers can symbolize many things and most varieties have a history of "standing" for something. If you are purchasing a dozen flowers that happen to be roses, make sure you're sending the right message! For example, it's widely known that a red rose symbolizes love. But did you know that a pink rose signifies perfect happiness; a yellow rose means true friendship and a black rose, although it can be beautiful, stands for death?

Roses have certainly branched out from the standard red beauties. You can now find them in a bounty of colors and when giving them, mixing them can send the perfect message. Send a bouquet of red and white which together signifies unity, or give someone special light and dark pink roses meaning thanks and admiration. Roses can also come in orange, coral, peach and lavender as well as a variations that are "created". You can also purchase medium stem length roses, which tend to be less expensive and thorn free stemmed roses, which are slightly more expensive.

Other flowers that are popularly given are carnations, which stand for affection, tulips which signify a "perfect lover", lilies which are majestic and daisies which can stand for innocence and purity. Most florists, when arranging the flowers you've purchased add greenery and baby's breath to fill out the bouquet. That baby's breath stands for everlasting love and the ivy they might add is for fidelity and friendship.

There are many traditional times throughout the calendar year when flowers are given. Most popular is of course Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Easter. However, a dozen flowers can be a beautiful token any time of year and with local florists as well as Internet ordering, there's no excuse not to be able to send or gift flowers that say exactly what you mean to someone special.
